Chrysalid is a dynamic cocoon aiming at transforming the canons around contemporary art and its market.
It’s a conceptual and experimental gallery based in Rotterdam (the Netherlands) that actively promotes and collaborates with young and daring artists from all over Europe.
As a communal platform, Chrysalid wants to give the artists room to experiment, to grow in their vision and to fearlessly portrait reality through the insight of their unique practices.
In this metamorphic framework, the individuals behind the idea of the gallery collaborate to reshape and broaden the narratives in contemporary art, making them more inclusive and representative of the multitude of details that existence is made of.
Chrysalid is not a showbox.
Chrysalid is a pulsating core of transformative energy.
GALLERY CURRENT EXHIBITION
Solo Curatorial Exhibition
14 March | 20 July 2020
DANCE QUEERDO DANCE
With her exhibition, Alice Lucchinelli builds a podium for the representation of the queer subculture of our beloved city by celebrating the unique identity of seven individuals that belong to this community. Their transcendental beauty will be shown through photographs and -most importantly- videos, which will unfold the unrestricted and glorious freedom that movement delivers in the heat of the performance.
Join us at Chrysalid Gallery to appreciate the wonderful character of Rotterdam and the unique and proud individuals that make its subculture.
Stay tuned for the upcoming events on the theme of queerness that will be organised during the duration of the exhibition!
PHOTO BASEL VIRTUAL
The combination of these two artists that work with the medium of photography has at its core two different portrayals of body and colour, both used here as methods of self-expression and of symbolic representation.Rabin Huissen, with his off-camera prints, has come up his own personal method of creating a photo-sensitive coat on top coloured paper that allows him to create unique pieces that scrutinize the physicality of the body as a tool and as a central subject. Huissen’s body of work manages to masterfully staple together in a subtle visual composition many layers of meaning, producing not only an elegant array but also delivering a project that encapsulates all the critical points of views of his research.
Lisandro Suriel, on a similar hand, wields colours and human presence in his project as elements of critical thinking on postcolonialism and on the deconstruction of New World symbolism. Through the singular use of imagination, Suriel has created a reality in which folkloric figures act as agents of history and animate cultural memory. His series Ghost Island -of which are here on display a few images- is a series of dreamlike landscapes that open the mind to imaginative thinking by titillating the viewer through the masterful use of visual symbols that carry intrinsic symbolic meaning.
